Work has now commenced for Wales & West Housing on the redevelopment of the former Ysgol Perth-y-Terfyn site in Holywell for a 55-apartment, extra care housing development. The four-story apartment block has 43 one-bed apartments and 12 two-bed units. The scheme, will provide much needed, high quality accommodation backed up by 24-hour on-site care and support for adults.

Demolition of Ysgol Perth y Terfyn has now been completed and enabling and site preparation works are now underway with groundworks for the new build due to commence in July. The brick, hardcore and concrete from the old school are being crushed and recycled on-site with mobile plant to produce high quality aggregate whilst ensuring a sustainable use of these waste materials.

Ysgol Perth y Terfyn closed down in 2016, along with the former Holywell High School building and Ysgol y Fron, to form a new high school and primary school – Ysgol Treffynnon and Ysgol Maes-y-Felin. The campus now accommodates for 600 high school learners and 315 primary school pupils.

This is the second extra care housing development for in Flintshire for Anwyl and Wales & West Housing. In 2013, Llys Jasmine extra care development was completed providing state-of-the-art supported accommodation to help older people with care and support needs to live independently for as long as they possibly can. The 61-apartment complex includes 33 one bedroom and 28 two bedroom apartments specially designed for people with dementia, plus an additional two, two bedroom bungalows.

Anwyl in partnership with Wales & West Housing will work with Welsh Government and Procure Plus to create significant social benefits for the local communities including developing training and apprenticeship opportunities throughout the life of the project.

Shayne Hembrow, Deputy Chief Executive for Wales & West Housing, said:

“This new extra care scheme will be our second in Flintshire, providing even more capacity for independent living in high quality accommodation with access to 24 hour on-site care and support.
“We are delighted to be working closely with Flintshire County Council to deliver the scheme and with Anwyl Construction as lead contractor we are able to ensure that jobs are created and retained in North Wales, providing a significant economic boost for the region.”
The new development will provide similar state-of-the-art supported accommodation to help older people with care and support needs – including dementia – to live independently.”
