Double Win in LABC Awards for Best Social Housing project category

Double success in the Best Social Housing category in both Flintshire and Denbighshire for the prestigious Local Authority Building Control awards issued by the North Wales local authorities and made by their Building Control departments, the people who inspect new developments across the region.

The schemes named are the £2.4 million Maes Helyg scheme for the Pennaf Housing Group at Welsh Road, Garden City, in Flintshire. The new development is an affordable homes scheme consisting of 6-one bedroom and 15 two-bedroom apartments which was completed in time to house local people for Christmas.

Craig Sparrow, Corporate Director of Commercial Services for the Pennaf Housing Group, which includes Clwyd Alyn Housing Association, said:

It’s excellent that the new Maes Helyg apartments have been recognised by Flintshire County Council for the high standard and commitment to Building Regulation compliance throughout the construction progress. Congratulations to Anwyl, our construction partners for their attention to detail. The completion of the development before Christmas has provided 21 new affordable homes for local Flintshire people.

The second scheme is the £1.7m Afallon development in Abbey Street in the heart of Rhyl’s West End overlooking the Gerddi Heulwen green space and was built for The West Rhyl Housing Co-operative, Wales’s first urban rental housing co-operative, formed by North Wales Housing and West Rhyl Community Land Trust.

The scheme comprises seven three-bedroom family homes with private gardens and parking and Anwyl also refurbished former commercial premises to house a community shop and a bakery on the ground floor with two one-bedroom and two two-bedroom flats above.

Councillor Brian Jones, Denbighshire County Council’s Lead Member for Highways, Planning and Sustainable Travel, said:

Anwyl Construction has been an ardent supporter of Local Authority Building Control and consistently delivers a quality product. The Afallon site deserves the award due to the excellent standards of construction, site management, reliability and communication. Anwyl has produced a finished product of the highest standard whilst maintaining an excellent relationship with Building Control.
